BGE Rates Drop For 2nd Year In A Row

Average residential bill down $28 since 2009

Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. customers will be paying less beginning June 1.

Under new rates approved last week by the Maryland Public Service Commission, consumers will see their utility bills decrease by about 14 percent from the same time last year.

In the past two years, utility rates have gone down from 12 cents per kilowatt hour to 9.2 cents per kilowatt hour, BGE officials said.

That equals a savings of about $28 per month, or $336 per year, for the average residential customer since 2009, the result of continuing declines in wholesale energy prices, the company said.

"That is meaningful to some people," said Mark D. Case, senior vice president of strategy and regulatory affairs for BGE. "The average utility bill is about $130, and every little bit helps, particularly for low-income customers who may be having trouble with their utility bills."
